At First National Bank, Cortez (FNBC) our fraud protection services are in place to give you peace of mind. We’re doing everything we can to ensure your account’s integrity. Fraud Center analysts work around the clock to minimize the impact of fraud and reduce loss. Fraudulent use alerts are generated at the onset of suspicious activity. They are based on rules, models, algorithms, your spending habits, and logic to detect possible fraudulent activity within minutes of the transaction, while maintaining a low false-positive rate. High-risk transactions are identified and reviewed by a fraud analyst for all Visa debit and ATM cards. If fraud is suspected, the Fraud Center will attempt to contact you using the contact information you provide to First National Bank, Cortez to verify the legitimacy of the transactions. So that we may minimize any inconvenience, please make sure we always have your current address, phone numbers, and email.
If fraud is suspected, the Fraud Center will attempt to contact you via email, text message, and phone (in that order). All forms will come from the Fraud Center on behalf of First National Bank, Cortez. If you confirm a transaction is fraudulent, your card will be immediately disabled and unusable to prevent further activity; you will be instructed to contact FNBC during business hours to reissue a new card. If you are not available to confirm the activity, the card will be temporarily blocked until we can reach you to prevent additional fraud from occurring. This service is provided automatically for all FNBC customers at no charge.
How will the fraud center contact me?
First attempt: When potential fraud is detected, you will receive an automatic email notification, with reply instructions to either confirm or deny a fraudulent transaction.
Second attempt: One minute after the email, you will receive a text alert, with reply instructions to either confirm or deny a fraudulent transaction.
Third attempt: If there is no response received, you will then receive automatic phone calls to either confirm or deny a fraudulent transaction. The call will also give the option of speaking to a fraud analyst.
While the Fraud Center monitors your account at all times, they will only text you between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Phone calls are made only between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Emails are sent 24/7. FNBC will attempt to contact you to discuss the potential fraudulent transaction, if the Fraud Center has been unsuccessful in reaching you after 24 hours.
Remember, these messages will never ask for your PIN or account number. The phone number for the Fraud Center is 1.800.417.4592. We recommend adding this number to your phone’s contacts list and labeling it “Fraud Center,” to avoid missed calls from an unknown number.

You also have the option to sign up for fraud text alerts from smsGuardian. Unlike the Fraud Center’s text alerts that are generated based on suspicious activity, smsGuardian fraud text alerts are generated each time certain types of transactions occur. Fraud text alerts are triggered any time one of the following transactions occurs to verify its legitimacy:
• International transactions
• Any amount greater than $300
• Purchase without card (online transactions)

Fraud text alerts from smsGuardian
smsGuardian is an anti-fraud text alert service for Visa debit and ATM card transactions that sends alerts directly to you via text message. This service works alongside the Fraud Center. When you verify unauthorized activity, the information is immediately routed to a fraud analyst for card blocking and follow up, reducing the window of time in which subsequent unauthorized transactions could take place.
The text you receive will refer to one of the transaction types listed above. No reply is needed if the transaction is not fraudulent. Reply with the provided code if the transaction is unauthorized; this will disable the card so no further fraudulent transactions can take place. In which case, call FNBC for further instruction. You can also reply “stop” to cancel future text alerts or “help” for more information.
You will receive alerts on your cell phone(s), or other short message service (SMS) device for enrolled Visa debit and ATM cards. The number of alerts you receive will be based on your card usage and the types of transactions you make. Fraud text alerts are reliable, flexible, and extremely easy to manage. You can enroll your cards and mobile numbers online. Enrollments are effective for one year. You will be notified prior to expiration and can respond to a renewal text to extend enrollment for another year.
How do fraud text alerts work?
• Sends alerts about suspicious card activity directly to you via two-way text message communication. If transaction is authorized, no action is required; instructions are included to report the transaction as unauthorized.
• Routes fraud confirmation to an analyst at the Fraud Center for card blocking and follow up.
• Allows enrollment for two mobile SMS devices per card number.
• Offers “do not disturb” times. Messages will be queued and sent after a pre-set time.
• Provides an easy enrollment and renewal process.
• Supports all major mobile phone carriers. Message and data rates may apply.

Additional info about fraud text alerts
Mobile service providers including Sprint, Nextel, Boost, and Virgin require that we send a 30-day subscription reminder message to their customers participating in smsGuardian. If you have one of these carriers, you will receive an alert message every 30 days reminding you of the subscription with instructions for help or to cancel.
